• Plot: One of the premier singer/songwriters of the 1970s, Harry Chapin was a tireless champion of humanitarian causes, notably World Hunger Year. From 1972, when the bittersweet song 'Taxi' catapulted Chapin from Greenwich Village documentary filmmaker to a pop music icon, until his untimely death in 1981, the sympathetic storyteller performed more than 200 shows a year - half of them for charitable organizations. In this hour-long PBS Soundstage presentation from the series' inaugural season, Chapin and his band (Michael Masters,cello; Ron Palmer, guitar; John Wallace, bass) perform songs from 'The Book of Chapin,' including 'Taxi,' 'Cats In The Cradle,' 'WOLD' and 'What Made America Famous.' The show features an appearance by Chapin's brother, Tom Chapin, host of the popular 1970s children's program Make A Wish. Chapin also is captured answering audience questions about his ever-present smile and the creative process.
