Un prisionnnier condamné pour des délits mineurs, Gary, surnommé Brute, est envoyé dans un orphelinat roumain dirigé par un médecin alcoolique. Il découvre les conditions terribles dans lesquelles vivent ces enfants. La présence de l’infirmière Mara, sa force de caractère et son acharnement éclairenet son quoditien. Et puis il y a Elena, une petite orpheline de treize ans qui cherche à le séduire.; --------------------------------------------------------------; In the early 90s, the British Government decided to send prisoners serving short term sentences over on humanitarian service. Some went to Romania to help wieh the schools, the hospitals and the orphanages. Some of them were real BRUTES. Gary (Til Schweiger) discovers the misery of the Romanian orphans under the merciless rule of Sincai (Pete Postlethwaite). He tries to escape and gets caught, which allows him to learn more about the kids, some of which are adopted for cash, some of which ar very sick. The doctor in charge (John Hurd) doesn’t seem to be able to do much as the charity funds, simply vanish.... Gary falls in love with a nurse (Polly Walker) and starts caring for the first time of his life.;
