But with the coming of World War II and a failed love affair, Judith's enchanted life at Nancherrow soon proves too good to be true.; ; Volume 2:; In the midst of her dedicated service to the war effort, Judith chances upon a caring friend from Nancherrow. What would seem to be an act of wartime comfort awakens feelings unbeknowst to her. But a cruel twist of fate causes Judith to believe she has once again found only friendship, rather than love. Loveday settles for marriage to a local farmer after learning that her true love has become a casualty of war. Meanwhile, Judith hears that her mother and sister may have drowned during an escape attempt from war-torn Singapore. As World War II draws to a close, Judith is faced with more grave news. Just as she did when she was a schoolgirl, Judith seeks refuge with the Carey-Lewis family at Nancherrow. But this time, she arrives as a mature woman and finds what she has been searching for all this time.
