• Plot: The magnum opus of director Masaki Kobayashi (Hakari, Samurai Rebellion), HUMAN CONDITION is a trilogy of epic movies that show the horrific brutalities of World War II and their effect on those involved in the fighting and on Japanese society.; ; Winner of the San Georgio Prize at the 1960 Venice Film Festival, Human Condition I (NO GREATER LOVE) tells the story of Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai), a civilian administrator with pacifist beliefs whose humane treatment of the mine workers he supervises and Allied prisoners-of-war angers the authorities. Kaji is eventually the victim of a plot by his superiors, who engineer an escape attempt that leads to the beheading of one of his subordinates. Kaji is put on trial for treason and tortured, but ultimately he is acquitted and released, only to be drafted into the army.; ; Kobayashi based HUMAN CONDITION in part on his own life experiences during World War II. After being drafted and sent to Manchuria, Kobayashi refused promotion as a protest against the brutality of the Japanese army and served as a private for the entire war, eventually being captured by the Americans. He began his directorial career in 1952 but wasn't able to begin production on his trilogy until 1959, spending the following 3 years shooting the three films.
