The true-life story of Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach (a cohort of Thomas Mann's children Erika and Klaus, played by Jeanette Hain of The Trio) and ethnologist Ella Maillart (played by Nina Petry of Run Lola Run) unfolds along the often-arduous route from Geneva, Switzerland (via the Balkans and Persia) to Kabul, Afghanistan. At a time when Europe is preparing for World War II, Annemarie is trying to run away from her addiction to morphine and Ella searches for a tribe of nomads living in the legendary Kafiristan Valley, in hopes that their story will enhance her body of published scholarly works.
