Ad una riunione cittadina prende corpo l'idea di approfittare del momento di notorietà per sfidare i New York Rangers, la squadra famosa in tutto il mondo. Alcuni sono contrari, ma alla fine prevale la voglia di rischiare e la sfida viene lanciata e raccolta. A comporre la squadra di Mystery ci sono, tra gli altri, lo sceriffo John Biebe, il droghiere, un fattorino e uno studente dell'ultimo anno del liceo. Nell'entusiasmo generale, il giudice Walter Burns, allenatore della squadra, è l'unico che cerca di far riflettere anche sulle conseguenze di una sconfitta. Ma ormai il meccanismo si è avviato ed è impossibile fermarlo. Mentre i giorni che mancano all'incontro si assottigliano, i partecipanti affrontano tanti piccoli/grandi problemi personali: c'è un processo in corso che si celebra a New York, c'è il sindaco che scopre un tradimento della moglie, ci sono storie sentimentali che per l'evento imminente devono essere rimandate. Dopo un rischio di rinvio, i New York Rangers arrivano e la partita può cominciare. Si susseguono molte emozioni, ma alla fine gli avversari prevalgono con il punteggio di 5 a 4. Due giocatori di Mystery però si sono messi in luce e vengono invitati a partire con la squadra di New York. John porta il dischetto della partita sulla tomba dell'avvocato che era morto mentre fervevano i momenti preparatori dell'evento.;
