• Plot: When the idea of creating a series counting down the top 100 players in NFL history was first proposed, I admit I wasn't very enthusiastic. Television is flooded with countodown shows, and very few are distinctive. But as we began considering the show, we realized that we had in our grasp the holy trinity of a good sprts documentary series - action, analysis and reminiscence. ; ; NFL Films' original role was to create an image for the league. Our role now is to preserve and perpetuate the memories and accomplishments of the greatest players - many of whom have been forgotten. Our hope was that this series would begin ghe process of winning them back the fame they long ago earned.; ; As for teh selection process - it was arduous. Einstein didn't create a formula for something like this. Football is less of a numbers game than baseball or basketball, and if you don't consider the teams each man played on or the times they played in you'd miss their overall impact. We felt that our shows would tell great stories, but would ultimately start more arguments than they would end.; ; We created an 85-member panel which included Hall of Fame selectors, coaches, scouts, general managers, owners, former players, statisticians, historians and TV analysts. The results surprised us as much as they may surprise you. While you may disagree with their rankings, you can't help but be impressed at the collection of talent and achievement included in our final list of op 100 players.; ; Looking back at the series as a whole, I think we accomplilshed the goal we set for ourselves at the onset of this project - be true to the players and what they accomlished and leave the viewer with the wonder and excitement of great players playing the game we all love.
