Ford painstakingly recreates the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and even manages to build up suspense by staging several scenes of the unsuspecting military personnel at work, play and worship. So convincing were many of the attack scenes that they have since been excerpted in several documentaries. ; ; Winner of the Best Documentary Short Subject Academy Award in 1944, the film also provides a look into life in Hawaii before the war and life in the Japanese community there - a rare glimpse into history. ; ; Also included is the wartime short, 'Recognition of the Japanese Zero,' starring Ronald Reagan. Designed as a public service film to help American civilians recognize a Japanese bomber plane in the event of an air raid, it provides insight into daily life in that period.
