L'un et l'autre tentent tant qui bien que mal de composer avec les excentricités absurdes de Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty), le milliardaire totalement imprévisible qui les emploie. Or, leur attraction mutuelle ne met pas seulement leurs convictions religieuses à l'épreuve, elle contrevient aussi à une règle d'or de Hughes: nul employé ne peut entretenir de relation, de quelque nature que ce soit, avec une actrice sous contrat. Le comportement de Hughes les plonge alors tous deux dans un univers étrange qui changera leurs vies à jamais.
