Young and determined Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) arrives in Coal Valley, a rural mining town recently devastated by a mine explosion. Immediately feeling the challenges of prairie life, Elizabeth struggles to start a career as a teacher, bond with the grieving community and make friends with the skeptical women in town. She finds encouragement in a budding friendship with handsome Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) and her new roommate, Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin). But just as things are looking up for Elizabeth and the residents of Coal Valley, the town widows are affected by devastating news that tests their perseverance and challenges their spirit.
